Harley

St Mary

SY5 6LP parking on the road, wheelchair access, open February to November, daylight hours

Harley is the only village in Shropshire called 'a thankful village' because in the First World War twenty men of the village went off to war and they all returned - by the grace of God.

The earliest part of this stonebuilt church is the tower. The lower part of it dates from the 13th century. The church itself was rebuilt in the 19th century and now houses a dedicated congregation from the village and farther afield. There is a  daytime opening schedule from March to November.

Family Breakfast service on the first Sunday of the month, a second Sunday Eucharist and a shared Evensong with Cound Church in alternate months. Alternate weeks there is a coffee morning with indoor bowls or just a chat in the village hall.

There is an ancient yew tree in the churchyard which commands views over Wenlock Edge.

Harley Garden trail 11am-5pm

Entry: At the car park in Pound field next to village hall, Harley SY5 6LP

Among the village houses dating from medieval to 21st century there are seven gardens open in the central village. One garden is a good example of gardening for biodiversity with a wildlife pond, wildflower meadow, woodland and a ‘dead hedge’. A beautiful contemporary garden at Stream Barn is also open 1.5 miles away at Wigwig. Designed as a series of rooms, this garden features a pond and rill, summerhouse, fruit and vegetable garden and specimen trees. Further away from the house the garden the garden is managed with a lighter touch becoming naturalised with woodland paths and a fernery.

Teas served at the village hall. Plant stall. Sorry no dogs. Village hall parking reserved for disabled only. Entry £6.
